There are  times in researching that I can be both excited and frustrated with search results. This morning I was doing some research on David Ritter, b. 1842 - d. 1863, served in the Civil War. My Ancestry search led me to a shared family tree. I browsed the tree, along the Ritter lines and came to Maria Elizabeth Keck, an ancestor I already have in my records. She is my 5th great grandmother through my paternal grandmother's lines.

Maria Elizabeth Keck was born 15 April 1747 in Pennsylvania & died 2 June 1813. She married Johannes Ritter, b. 1743 - d. 1816 in Pennsylvania. Maria and Johannes had 11 children. Her parents were Henry & Hannah Keck. I have no dates or other information for her parents.

The Ancestry tree showed dates for Henry & Hannah, other children for them and two more previous generations for the Keck family. It could put our family back to 1614 in Germany and add dozens of Keck family members to our tree. That is the exciting part. However, the only source given  for this information is a geocities website, which, of course, no longer exists. Keep your fingers crossed. I have sent off an email to the owner of the Ancestry tree in hopes of: 1. getting a reply, 2. getting reliable sources/documents to back up the posted facts. I will post any results I get.

Alberta Joy (Gardner) Brown was born 26 March 1928 in the Bronx during the Great Depression. Her parents, Nathaniel & Helen (Coyle) Gardner had waited several years for her arrival and were so happy they gave her the name Joy. She was also named in remembrance for her father’s brother, Albert Gartner, b. 11 December 1988 & d. c. 1920. He was a nurse. 

Alberta Joy grew up in the Bronx. In 1934 they lived at to 2856 East 197th Street in the Bronx. She roller skated on the sidewalks, swam in the river with her father, took dance lessons and attended public school #71. She went to Mass at the neighborhood Catholic Church. On 23 May 1936, Joy received her First Holy Communion at the Church of Saint Theresa. She was a little red haired girl with lots of freckles and a tendency to get herself in mischief. 

One day Joy’s friends thought tree climbing would be fun.  There was a tall tree next to the apartment building she lived in.  She climbed right up, higher and higher till she could see her mother in the second floor window.  Joy called to her and thought it was great fun when her mother looked out, surprised.  Helen immediately ran down the stairs and to the foot of the tree.  She spoke softly to her daughter, urging her to climb down.  Naturally, she was terrified that her only child would fall to the sidewalk.  So she spoke softly as to not startle her.  Slowly Joy came down.  Once she was safely on the ground, Helen started scolding her and warming her bottom!  Joy couldn’t understand why her mother was so upset.

On Election Day 1940 the Gardners moved to a small house in the country in Germantown, NY.  She had to adjust from living in one of the world’s largest cities to a town with no traffic lights, dirt roads and a small school for grades K – 12. She traded her much loved roller skates for a bicycle, met a girl who was to become her lifelong best friend and decided country life was not so bad after all. Alberta Joy lived in Germantown for the rest of her life. She met her husband at a square dance. She & Delbert K. Brown were married 8 August 1948. They had four children. I am the second of those four children, very fortunate to have had such a marvelous mother.

Rittersville, Pennsylvania

It is quite thrilling to think there is a town named after a branch of our family.  It was a village in Hanover Township.  About 1920 it became a section of Allentown, Pennsylvania.

The Rittersville website tells us:

Historically, two things were needed to make a village:  a crossroads, and a tavern/inn. The crossroads provided the traffic, while the tavern and inn provided a meeting place for local residents and a place for travelers to stay overnight during the arduous journey from one place to another.  Most often, the name of the village was based upon the name of the proprietor of the tavern.  Rittersville was no exception.

Although he was not the first resident in the Rittersville area the village "founder" is considered to be Michael Ritter.  In 1808, Ritter and his family moved from Northampton county to Rittersville. 

In 1812 Michael Ritter led the building of a school. German was taught there. In 1825 Michael opened a store. In 1828 the post office opened and Michael Ritter was the first post master. Go to the website to learn more and see photos of our ancestors’ home town.

This history volume chronicles many Ritters. They are descendants of one of the four original Ritter brothers who came to the United States from Germany: Heinrich Ritter, Paul Ritter, Martin Ritter & Casper Ritter. They sailed on the ship ‘Pennsylvania Merchant’ from Rotterdam, landing in Philadelphia on 11 September 1732. 

One of these is Michael Ritter b. 18 April 1782 & d. 17 March 1854 m. Margaret Arner. His exact connection to the original four brothers is unclear but he is the man who gave the name to Rittersville.

“He was the founder of Rittersville and built the first hotel there, in connection with which he kept a store, and farmed several hundred acres of land. He was a member of the Assembly and as justice of the peace of Hanover Township.”

Seventy Years History of Saint Peter's Lutheran and Reformed Congregations of Rittersville, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. Harrisburg, Pennsylvania: 1912.

In January 1842 a group of people gathered at the home of Michael Ritter to discuss building a church. The land they eventually decided to build on was formerly the property of Michael, then owned by his son, Thomas.Michael was an Elder of the church. This volume of history includes a listing of tombstones in the church cemetery. Michael and other Ritters are listed.

This volume of history tells us Rittersville included an old blacksmith shop, built about 1822. The cemetery was laid out and the church erected in 1842. In 1868 a race course was laid out.

The grounds were enlarged to sixteen acres, and fitted up at a cost of twelve thousand dollars. The grounds are open for trotting and pacing in May and August each year.

This history writes about Michael. He had four sons: Charles, Thomas, William and Franklin. Charles ran the hotel, was post master and died June 1883. Thomas and William lived and died in Rittersville. Franklin was a school teacher.

The Irish Connection to my Father's Family

 My mother’s Irish connection stands out very proudly and clearly. Not as clear to my family is our Irish connection on my father’s family tree. There are many links to Germany & Switzerland. Although our Irish ancestors have not as yet been closely researched, they do exist. One Irish connection is through the Dillon family that moved from Virginia to the Carolinas and into Mississippi came from Ireland. Richard Dillon, son of James Theopilous Dillon and my 5^th great grandfather, served in the Revolutionary War.

Richard Dillon enlisted in the patriot militia near Edenton, N.C., under Captain Faulk. In 1781 Richard "again saw service as an enlistee on the vessel 'Greyhound,' a privateers man commanded by Samuel Butler.  With the capture of that vessel, he was made a prisoner on the English frigate 'Baloosa' which carried 36 guns and was commanded by a Captain Kennedy, a Scotsman.  After a nine-month imprisonment, he again returned to Bertie County." After the war he and “his wife came to Mississippi and settled on Bogue Chitto, at what is known as Dillon's Bridge, or Dillontown.” 

I recently searched family trees on ancestry.com to look for connections to this family, hoping to learn more about the Irish roots. I found trees that claimed the father of James Theopilous Dillon was James Dillon, b. 1697 in Cork, Ireland and d. 1798 in Virginia, married to Martha Parsons. However, there are no sources connected with these trees.  I would love to claim James & Martha as my own but I’d like to find some documentation to support their link to our family. There are many times when this happens with the family trees on ancestry.com. I usually email the people who post the trees to discover more. The response is often that they have no sources; they just saw it on someone else’s tree and copied it onto theirs. I do not want to follow their lead. Hopefully further research will bring James & Martha firmly into our family.
