I always like noticing whether an ancestor had a mortgage and am always surprised and delighted when they owned something mortgage-free. Maybe it's because today's mortgages seem to last forever. I guess reading "mortgage-free" makes me think they were doing well, but it could also mean they inherited the farm that had already been paid off.
ReplyDeletevery true, Wendy.
DeleteI know your southern roots must be more frustrating to reseach then your northern roots. After 38 years of researching in the South it sad to realize how much data and actual toombstones have been lost over the years. Unable to determine your grandmother's death date is just typical. Your brst bet since she died after 1910 is to look for an obit or family Bible.
ReplyDeleteGood idea, Charlie. I'll add it to my 'To Do' list.
