Martha E Alford Brumfield; Great Great Grandma

Martha Elizabeth Alford Brumfield

8 August 1846 MS – after 1910

My Great Great Grandmother

Martha was the daughter of Edwin Barksdale Alford & Martha P Smith. She was one of 13 children. Her siblings were: Warren Jackson, Cynthia Ann, Ira Payne, William H., Harriet Jane, Lacey A., Jeptha J., Julia Ann, Seaborn S., Elijah H., Julius Newton & Julia Ann Alford. The Edwin Alfords were in MS from the early 1800’s onwards.[1],[2]

Martha married Jessie Alexander Brumfield, son of Nathaniel Brumfield & Charlotte Temple Ott. In 1870 they were living in Osyka, Pike, MS with three children. Jessie was a farmer.[3] In 1878 those three children were attending school in Pike, MS.[4] By 1880 Jessie & Martha had 6 children, ages 11 months to 13 years old.[5] The children attended school in Pike Co., MS.[6],[7]

The family lived on Walkers Bridge Road in 1900. Jessie owned his farm without a mortgage. Three children were still at home.[8] In the 1910 census Martha was the mother of ten children; seven living.[9] Research has uncovered nine children for Martha.

At this time Martha’s death year is unknown. If you know more about my great great grandmother please contact me.

  1. I always like noticing whether an ancestor had a mortgage and am always surprised and delighted when they owned something mortgage-free. Maybe it's because today's mortgages seem to last forever. I guess reading "mortgage-free" makes me think they were doing well, but it could also mean they inherited the farm that had already been paid off.

  2. I know your southern roots must be more frustrating to reseach then your northern roots. After 38 years of researching in the South it sad to realize how much data and actual toombstones have been lost over the years. Unable to determine your grandmother's death date is just typical. Your brst bet since she died after 1910 is to look for an obit or family Bible.
