Yesterday being the fiftieth wedding
anniversary of Col. Aaron Brown and wife, some of the old settlers hereabouts
decided to celebrate the occasion by having a gathering in Odd Fellows Hall
where refreshments and a social order of affairs should mark the event. It
being “our busy day” we were not present. Col. Brown has passed the greater
portion of his married life in this vicinity.

It is interesting that Col. Aaron Brown's wife's name is never mentioned in this clipping about their anniversary.
No mention of the wife's name! I shouldn't be surprised. I have an obituary in which the deceased was "survived by his widow."
ReplyDeleteAmazing how little women mattered then.
DeleteBut change was coming. In 1857 my great grandmother was able to declare herself to be a feme sole trader. Feme-sole trader definition, a married woman who is entitled to carry on business on her own account and responsibility, independently of her husband.
ReplyDeleteYour great grandmother sounds like a wonderful, strong & independent woman!
