My husband & I went to the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, NY. We were living in the Buffalo NY area and decided we could not miss out on such a wonderful event that was not far from us. We still marvel that we attended that world wide event.
We saw Eric Heiden win a gold medal in speed skating. The speed skating oval was outside so we could watch as we walked along the main street. We attended ice dancing & hockey competitions. We loved walking along the street and seeing people from around the world. We had been to quiet little Lake Placid before and were surprised at the transformation.
Talking about that weekend at the Olympics brings back happy memories.
Have you ever attended a summer or winter Olympics?

Sounds like quite a memorable trip to the Olympics. I lived in NY state back then and could have gone, but I was wrapped up in work and felt I had no time to spare. Looking back, I missed an unforgettable experience. Treasure your memories!
ReplyDeleteIt was great fun. We scraped together the money. Tickets were expensive. Restaurants in the town had raised their prices for the duration of the Olympics. But now who can put a price on the memories?
DeleteWhat a fun memory. :)
ReplyDeleteWe were definitely swept up by Olympic fever!
DeleteWe should have gone when the Olympics were in Atlanta. Planning became too complicated so we didn’t go. Wish we had tried harder.
ReplyDeleteI was in Montreal in summer 1976 & Lake Placid in winter 1980. I'd like to go to another but the planning, as you wrote, is complicated. Something in the USA would be nice.
DeleteWhat fun! I love the winter Olympics and I'm sure the energy being there in person is much different than watching on TV. (Though I suspect the views on TV are better than being there.) Great photo of you and your husband.
ReplyDeleteNancy, you are right. The energy from the athletes & the spectators is in the air. And when you leave you carry it with you.
