Mavis Marie (Brown) Smith was born 18 August 1897. She grew up in Mississippi with her parents and siblings. She married Denny Herbert Smith, son of Elvin Dennie Smith and Nancy Cordelia Smith. In 1920 they lived in Simmonsville, Pike County, Mississippi. Denny was a farmer. Nathalee was two years old.[i]Denny and Mavis went on to have two more children: Fay Seward Smith and Wilma Lucille Smith. 
            Mavis died 28 June 1928. 
            Denny married again, to Mary Thelma (Ellzey) Brown. Mary had children with previous husbands. In 1940 Denny was in Pike County with Mary and his children, Nathalee Smith, Fay S. Smith, Wilmer L. Smith, and his stepchildren, Rayleen Brown, F. Strobel Cawley and M. Jacqueline Cawley.[ii]
            Denny died 18 March 1966.

Tylertown. Funeral services for Denny Herbert Smith, 74, farmer of the Silver Creek Community were conducted Saturday afternoon from the Silver Creek Baptist Church where he was a member. Mr. Smith, a native and life-long resident of Pike County, died Friday at a Denham Springs, La. Hospital after along illness. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Nathalee Comeaux, Denahm Springs, La., and Mrs. Wilma Bushler, Baton Rouge, La.; one son, Fay S. Smith, Osyka; two sisters, Mrs. H. A. Brown, Osyka, and Mrs. Maude Brock, Baton Rouge, and seven grandchildren.[iii]
