Forget Me Not: George W Wolf, 1920 PA

 When I read an obituary there is often something special included that I stop and read again. George was "the last surviving member of a family of nine children."  We can read that he had a wife, children, grandchildren,... but his siblings had all died before him. I wonder if that was painful for him.

Death of George W. Wolf

 

Abbottstown, June 24. – George W. Wolf, of this place, died last Saturday morning of a complication of diseases, aged 78 years, 1 month and 9 days.

 

He was the last surviving member of a family of nine children of the late Frederick and Louisa Wolf. Surviving him are his wife, Ida L. Wolf, and the following children: Ray Wolf, of York, and Mrs. Samuel Nagle and Mrs. Wilbur Haines, of this place. He is also survived by the following grandchildren: Irma and George Nagle, Mrs. Elmer Bitt, Virginia, Maude and Elinor Wolf, George and Grove Haines; and two great – grandchildren, Grace and Ervin Butt.

 

Funeral was held from his late home Tuesday afternoon, Rev. John W. Keener officiating. Interment in Mt. Olive cemetery.

Letters from the Past – 1899 Gruissy Letter

 

My family has letters from our Mark/Gruissy family. My paternal aunt, Genevieve A. Brown Wieland Schaperjahn shared those letters with me.  I would like to share transcripts of those letters with anyone who may be connected to this family or anyone who is interested into a look into the past.

Regina was 20 years old at the time this letter was written. There are no family stories of this suitor for my great grandmother’s affections. We do know that W H Ackerman did not become the husband of Regina.

Dear friend. I will take the pleasure of writing to you this evening. Well Regina I was up to Massillon Sunday night. I went up on the 4 o’clock train and came home on the 8.51 train. But I did not see any girls I cared about. But of course no body else loves you. You say but I don’t think so.

Now Regina you know what I always said I loved you and you know it. If you knew you that letter hurt me you would never write that again. You know Regina I love you above all others. When you think I don’t care for you any more you can just stop writing to me.

I am also sorry to hear that you are not well hope you are better by this time. From Your Dear Beloved Friend, Walter. Ans. Soon

Forget Me Not: Samuel Wolf, 1894 PA

Samuel Wolf led and interesting life. He was at times a Sheriff, the owner of an inn, sold clothing, had an insurance business and was a farmer. He sounds like someone who liked to try new things.

On Friday evening, after a lingering illness, ex – Sheriff Wolf died at his residence on York street, this place, aged 66 years, 9 months and 10 days. In April he had a slight stroke of apoplexy which led to other complications, causing a protracted illness. 

 

The deceased was born in Abbottstown, this county. In 1860 he was elected Sheriff of Adams county, filling the office with credit to himself and satisfaction to the people. At the expiration of his term he purchased the Globe Inn and conducted it a number of years, selling out to the present proprietor, F. S. Ramer. He engaged in the clothing business for several years, but for the past twenty years has lived a retired life, devoting his time to farming his lots in and near town and in the insurance business. 

 

He leaves a widow, his second wife, and five children:

J. Nevin Wolf, of Pullman, Ill.;

Mrs. T. J. Stahle, of this place;

Mrs. C. B. Dyson, of Chambersburg;

Mrs. J. E. Weigand, of this place; and

Mrs. Rev. C. W. Baker, of Davenport, Nebraska.

 

During his long and useful life he took an active part in politics and in the general interests of the town, serving for three years as Councilman from the 1^st ward. 

 

His remains were interred in Evergreen Cemetery yesterday afternoon, the funeral being attended by many relatives and friends, by all of whom he was held in the highest esteem.

This couple began their married life with excitement at the Mardi Gras in New Orleans. My husband & I have visited that wonderful city, but never at Mardi Gras. It must have been a fun tale to tell for the almost 60 years they were married.

Of interest to Pike countians and others in Southwest Mississippi is the wedding last Saturday of Miss Norine Brumfield to Mr. Harry E. Pittman.

 

The ceremony was performed in the home of Rev. T. W. Green, pastor of the Magnolia Baptist church, who officiated.

 

Immediately after the ceremony, bride and groom went to New Orleans, where after witnessing the Mardi Gras exhibitions, they went to the gulf coast to visit relatives of the bride.

 

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Brumfield of Leggett. During the past five years, she has been a member of the faculty of Magnolia high school, and deservingly, one of the most popular young women in Pike county.

 

The groom is a prominent young farmer and merchant living east of Fernwood. He is, also, an employee of the Fernwood, Columbia and Gulf railroad.

Letters from the Past – 1896 Gruissy Letter

This letter was written by Regina's teacher, asking Regina to stay in school. My paternal grandmother, Ivy (Mark) Brown who was a daughter of Regina did not think that her mother returned to school as the teacher had advised. Ivy said, “She [Regina] was the youngest. Her parents were getting pretty old and she went out to work.”

Dear Regina,

We miss you in the Seventh Grade. Surely you are not thinking of quitting school. Remember that now is your only time for gaining an education and, if you allow the golden opportunity to pass by unheeded. It can never return. And remember how much better your advantages are than hundreds of boys and girls who can not attend except at night and then have only two hours of instruction while you are having five hours in the open day-time and can have your regular rest at night.

I hope to see you at school next Monday with a determination to, at least finish the Dueber School if you do not want to go any further, but, I would like to see you graduate and have your Diploma framed and hanging in your parlor at home.

Couple Says Vows in First Baptist Church

 

 

Miss Melisa Louise Sibley became the bride of James Edward Brumfield in a ceremony at 11 a. m. Feb. 5 in the First Baptist Church in McComb.

 

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Al Sibley of McComb and the bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe R. Brumfield of McComb.

 

Dr. John Lee Taylor officiated at the vows said at an altar holding candelabra with white tapers and entwined with ivy placed in front of a bay window. 

 

Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore a street length princess dress of white crepe with long bell sleeves and a funnel neckline. A crown of crepe embroidery held her white tulle veil and she carried a nosegay or red rose buds surrounding white for-get-me-nots.

 

Miss Maggie Price was maid of honor and her dress was identical to the bride’s but was in red crepe. She carried a nosegay of red and white rose buds.

 

Jerry Brumfield, brother of the bridegroom, was best man.

 

Hal Sibley, brother of the bride, lighted the candles and Mrs. Warren Williamson Jr., pianist, presented  a program of nuptial music and accompanied Miss Deborah Wood as she sang “The Wedding Song.”

 

Mrs. Sibley chose for her daughter’s wedding a yellow gold dress with long sleeves and a white orchid corsage and Mrs. Brumfield wore pink knit with long sleeves and a white orchid.

 

Attending form out of town were Dr. and Mrs. Riley Sibley, New Orleans, La.; Mrs. Barry C. Sibley, grandmother of the bride, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Alford, Hammond, La.; Mr. and Mrs. DaltonBurch, Meridian; Mr. and O. A. Varnado, Hattiesburg and Mrs. Clyde Varnado Magnolia.
