Jacob Alford

My 4x great grandfather

Jacob Alford was the son of Julius Alford & Lucy Newton.[1],[2] His siblings were: John, Isaac, Goodrich, Polly, Sarah & Job. He was born in Granville Co., NC which changed to Bute Co. in 1764 and changed to Franklin Co. in 1779. Without moving, he lived in three different counties.[3]

Julius, Jacob's father, died when Jacob was ten years old. His father remembered Jacob in his will writing, "...I give to my well beloved son Jacob the land and plantation whereon I now live lying on both sides of the Tar River, together with six cows and calves, six sows and pigs and one breeding mare to him and his heirs forever."  His father's will also stated that Jacob's mother had the use of the family land and plantation "during her life or widowhood."[4]

"On December 16, 1784 records showed "Jacob Alford of Franklin County" sold seventy-five acres of land lying on the east bank of the Tar River, 'being part of a tract of land that Julius Alford willed to Jacob, his son,' to a Robert Melton (Milton).  Witnessing the sale were Ansel Alford and Jacob's mother, Lucy Alford.  Jacob had moved from Franklin County by December 18, 1789, as a bill of sale to a Simon Williams referred to Jacob as 'late of Franklin County.'  In this sale Jacob sold his  'right, title, and claim' to his father's estate, but the stipulation of the sale guaranteed the land could not be 'received' until after his mother's decease."[5]

Jacob’s first wife was Elizabeth Bryant. They were married c 1785 in NC. They had seven children. Jacob’s second wife was Frances Seaborn. They were married c 1792 in NC. They had six children.[6],[7]

From North Carolina Jacob and family headed south to Montgomery Co., Georgia for a few years. His sons, Julius C. Alford [c 1798][8] and William Alford, were born in Georgia [1800].[9] He was granted 450 acres of land in Montgomery County, Georgia, in February 1802.[10]

He finally established a home in Louisiana. “Jacob Alford settled a tract of land in the Warnerton area of Washington Parish, Louisiana, by December, 1807.”[11]  Twins, John Seaborn & Seaborn John Alford were born 11 October 1807 in LA.[12]

Jacob had headrights to over six hundered acres on the Bogue Chitto River, north of Franklinton. Most of the settlers there had taken up their land before 1810 and none later than 1815. [13], [14] The northern boundary of his property was the line between the Mississippi Territory and Spanish West Florida.  The eastern boundary was the Bogue Chitto River."[15], [16]
