Sepia Saturday celebrates history & genealogy through photographs.
This week's Sepia Saturday centers on sports because of the Olympics in London. This is a photo of my husband and myself at the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid, New York. The streets were full of people at all hours of the day. We could walk down the street and see the outdoor speed skating rink as we passed. We saw graceful ice dancing. We saw a hockey game but not the famous games when the American team beat the Russians or when they won the gold. Mostly I remember the amazing cold weather and the high level of patriotic pride in all our athletes.
Great memories : let us hope that the London Olympics give rise to such positive memories. And can that have been 32 years ago - seems like only yesterday!
ReplyDeleteEvery time you see this picture you’ll have those happy memories. Thank you for sharing them with us today.
ReplyDeleteYou look well protected from the "amazing cold". Sounds a great experience.
ReplyDeleteI do not enjoy the cold but did not want to miss such a tremendous opportunity.
DeleteMy husband washed our car before we went. It was so cold that the doors froze shut & we had a hard time getting into the car for our drive to the Olympics. ha!
ReplyDeleteIt's unlikely that Britain will ever hold the Winter Olympics so your experience is one we can't repeat. I'm old enough to remember the 1948 games but only saw athletes on grainy newsreel film.
ReplyDeleteI am always amazed & impressed by Olympic athletes. They all deserve medals!
DeleteThis is so neat! It looks as if you two were pretty happy. I visited Lake Placid in 1990 and it was a very pretty little town.

Lake Placid is a wonderful place to visit any time of the year.
DeleteNever been to any of the Olympic games. Too bad for me. I did find your previous post interesting about the Irish genealogy mag. I signed up. My ancestry is Tobin and Fitzgerald. I don't know any of the towns or counties they were from but I will continue looking. Thanks

Good luck with your Irish research!
DeleteI was thinking too that 1980 seems so recent. time is passing much too fast.
