My Great Grands – Who lived longest?

I have been reviewing the information about my direct ancestors for 52 weeks/52 ancestors. That review inspired me to compare my great grandparents. 

• Who lived the longest? 
• Which branch of my family lived longer?
• Were they contemporaries? 
• Would they have met each other?

My father’s grandparents:

Jasper P Brown                 1865- 1950         85 years               Average life span: 85

Rose Brumfield                 1867 – 1948         81 years

Thomas K Mark                 1879 – 1975         95 years              

Regina Gruissy                  1879 – 1959         80 years

I know these two couples met. My father told me his Mississippi grandparents visited Ohio when he was a boy. It is logical that they would have met the Ohio folks [who were a dozen years younger] during the visit.

My mother’s grandparents:

Leopold Gartner               1860 – 1948         88 years               Average life span: 65

Fannie Edelstein              1860 – 1908        47 years

Michael Coyle                   1870 – unknown

Mary Jo Mullane              1867 – 1927         60 years

These two couples lived in New York City but it is unlikely that they ever met. Because of the times and their religious differences [Roman Catholic & Jewish] they both disowned their children when they married.

Lifespan:

This data is incomplete because I do not know when Michael Coyle died but a quick look shows my father’s grandparents were longer lived than my mother’s grandparents. Just an interesting note to history.

My Great Grandmother

I’d love to tell an endearing story about my great grandmother, a woman born in Austria/Hungry who died when my grandfather was a young man. However, I know almost nothing about this ancestor. I do know that my grandfather kept her picture (above) on top of his dresser and it has been handed down to me.

On 24 March 1878 Fanny Edelstein married Leopold Gartner, son of Marcus S Gartner and Laura Harrn.[1] In 1880 they were living at 59 Pitt Street, New York City. Leopold was a tailor. They had one daughter.[2] In 1900 the family was in Manhattan. Fanny was the mother of 2 daughters and 3 sons.[3]

Between the 1900 US census & the 1905 NYS census, Leopold changed his surname from Gartner to Gardner. Leopold was still a tailor while Fanny did house work. Three of the children were employed: Florence, 20, was a clerk; Nathaniel, 19, was a telegrapher; Moses, 17, was also a telegrapher. Albert, 15 was at school. The youngest daughter is not listed.[4]

Fannie was probably a big part of the day on 27 January 1907 when her oldest daughter, Florence, married Frank Samuel Weissberg, son of Morris & Rose Weissberg. She may have seen her oldest grandchild, Milton S Weissberg, born 27 December 1907 in Buffalo, NY. However, Fannie died soon after that. She died 28 February 1908. She is buried in Washington Cemetery, Kings, NY.[5]

My Great Grandfather

Leopold was the son of Marcus S. Gartner & Laura Harrn. At this time I know nothing of his life in Austria. He came to the United States about 1874 or 1875. In 1888 he became a naturalized citizen. At that time he lived at 264 Stanton St. and worked as a tailor.[1]

On 24 March 1878 Leopold married Fanny Edelstein, daughter of Adolph Edelstein and Netty Grofs.[2] In 1880 they were living at 59 Pitt Street, New York City. Leopold was a tailor. They had one daughter.[3] In 1900 the family was in Manhattan. Fanny was the mother of 2 daughters and 3 sons.[4]

Between the 1900 US census & the 1905 NYS census, Leopold changed his surname from Gartner to Gardner. Leopold was still a tailor while Fanny did house work. New York City Directories in the New York state Library in Albany, NY show that the Gartner/Gardner family moved often.

The family seemed to have found a home at 234 West 120^th Street. They were there in 1920[6] & in 1925[7]. Leopold continued to work as a tailor. His children usually lived with him. In 1930 Anna was the only child still at home.[8]

By 1940 Leopold was living with his oldest daughter, Florence, and her family in Buffalo, NY. His son in law, Samuel Weissberg was a furrier.[9] Leopold continued to live with his daughter until he died on 13 June 1948.[10] He had outlived two of his sons and his wife. He is buried at IOBA (North Park) Cemetery on Pine Ridge Heritage Blvd., Cheektowaga, NY.[11]

Below is the type of timeline I make for each branch of my family when I start working on that branch. [This sample is a partial timeline.]

I use the timeline as an outline as I write about my family. I put locations in bold so I can quickly track the movements of the family. I include local, state and national historical events that most likely affected my family. I look for gaps in time and try to fill those. If several family members are included I use a different color text for each. Whatever I include I give a source. If I don’t have a source, it is not a fact. When I am ready to write I have my facts & sources ready to go.
