 This wonderful photo was taken at the 50th Anniversary of my great grandparents. They were married 28 January 1903 in Medina, Ohio.

New Discovery!

 I have been researching my family's genealogy for about 40 years. I have visited cemeteries, city halls and libraries. I have filled many spiral notebooks with my discoveries.

It is surprising to find something new. It is a small thing but has given me a big smile. 

I recently discovered that my great, great grandfather,

had a middle name!

Helen V. Mark, 88, of Wooster, died Friday, January 8, 2010 at West View Manor.

 

She was born December 12, 1921, daughter of the late John and Emma (Lint) Sampsel. Helen married her husband, Ernest Miles Mark on February 22, 1946. He preceded her in death in 1996.

 

She farmed with her husband for many years and was later employed by the Daily record driving a motor route. Helen was a member of the Old Stone Church, Woman’s Guild at the church and the Golden Friends at First Presbyterian Church.   

 

Helen is survived by her children, Carl (Nancy) Mark of Wooster, Naomi (Dennis) Evans of Cocoa, FL, Marita (Greg) Buchanan of Wooster, and Melvin (Lisa) Mark of West Salem; 12 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; and one great – great – grandson.

 

Along with her husband and parents, Helen was preceded in death by brothers, Prem, Johnny, Harold, Paul, Arthur, Floyd and Carl; and sisters, Emma Wilhelm, Fern Roman and Mary Sampsel.

 

Services will be held on Wednesday January 13, at 11:00 a. m. at McIntire Davis and Greene Funeral Home, 216 E. Larwill, Wooster with Rev. John Fitch and Pastors Dan Bartkowiak and reic Fairhurst officiating. Interment will follow in the Wooster Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 6 – 9 p. m.

Forget Me Not: E. Mark, 1996 OH

 I met Miles a couple times in Ohio when our family drove out to visit my paternal grandmother's family. He was a friendly gentleman.

Husband of: Helen Virginia Sampsel

 

Ernest Miles Mark, 81, of 131 S. Main St., Congress Village, West Salem, died Thursday, De. 26, 1996, at the Wooster Community Hospital. Born Nov. 6, 1915, in Chester Township, he was the son of the late Amos Martin and Myrtle Lillian (Hoverstock) Mark.

In 1946 he married Helen Sampsel, who survives. 

He graduated from Chester High School.

Mr. Mark was a farmer until 1962 in Chester Township. He was also a custodian at Congress Junior High School and a bus driver for the Northwestern School District. He was a custodian at the City of Wooster Municipal Building, then at Grant St. Elementary School in the Wooster School District, where he retired.

Mr. Mark was a member of the Emmanuel United Church of Christ, a council member of Congress Village, a 50 – year member of Eagles 811 of Wooster and a 50 – year member of ABC Bowing Association. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, mushroom hunting and bird watching.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Mark is survived by two sons, Carl Amos Mark and wife Nancy of Wooster, and Melvin Mark and wife Mary of Spencer; two daughters, Naomi Evans and husband Dennis of Cocoa, Fla., and Marita Buchanan and husband Greg of Wooster; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great – grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a. m., Monday De. 30, 1996, at the McIntire, Davis & Greene Funeral Home in Wooster with the Rev. John Fitch officiating. Burial will follow in Wooster Cemetery.

Friends may call fro 2 – 4 p. m. and 7 – 9 p. m. Sunday at the funeral home.

The family requests contributions be made to the Emanuel United Church of Christ, 6000 Congress Road, Wooster, Ohio 444691.

Repeat Vows of Double Ring Ceremony

The Rev. Hayward Kehl performed the double ring ceremony in the Emanuel reformed church of Chester township, uniting in marriage Miss Lucile Mark, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Mark, of Wooster, Rt. 6, and William Huff, son of Mr. and Mrs. Russel Huff, of Dalton.

Eighty attended the wedding that took place Sunday, March 9.

Miss Carol Jean Martin, the pianist, played the traditional wedding marches by Wagner and Mendelssohn, and also ”Clare de Lune,” “Barccalle”, “I Love You Truly”, “To each His Own”, and “Liebestraum”.

For her wedding, the bride wore a white satin gown made with a sweetheart neckline and a full skirt which was gathered at the waist. Her floor – length veil was made of net. She wore the groom’s gift, a two – strand pearl necklace, and carried a bouquet of American beauty roses.

The bride’s maid of honor was Miss Betty Huff, who was dressed in pink. She carried a pink and white carnation bouquet. Bridesmaids were Miss Anna Steele and Miss Dorothy Emerson. They wore pink and blue gowns respectively, and their flowers were also pink and white carnations. Miss Betty Mark, junior bridesmaid, wore pink and carried a bouquet similar to the other attendants.

Best man was the bride’s brother, Joseph Mark. Ushers included James Martic, Ralph Huff, and Robert MuCullough.

A reception for fifty guests was held at the home of the bride. The bride’s table was centered with a three – tiered wedding cake topped with a miniature bride and groom.

The bride’s mother wore a navy blue polka dot dress and a corsage of sweetpeas. Mrs. Huff was dressed in navy blue. She also wore a sweetpea corsage.

For going away Mrs. Huff wore a two – piece fuchsia suit, a gray pinstripe coat and black accessories. After a short wedding trip in the east, the couple will live in Orrville.

Mrs. Huff is a graduate of Chester school and Mr. Huff graduated at Newscomerstown.

Forget Me Not: Isabell Mark Nee Ream, 1984 OH

 Isabell was the sister of my paternal grandmother, Ivy R. Mark Brown. We visited her in Ohio when I was young. I remember her many pretty knick knacks. My brothers and I were cautioned by our parents to be careful of the fragile objects. I remember she had a mirror in her bedroom. She cut our pictures of flowers from cards and adhered them all around the mirror. As a little girl, I thought it was beautiful.

Wadsworth – Isabell E. (Nee) Ream, 80, died March 9 at the Wadsworth Health Care Center after a lengthy illness.

 

Mrs. Ream was born in Medina County and resided in the Wadsworth – Seville area most of her life. She was Wadsworth Township Clerk for eight years, and a member of ACME Lutheran Church. She was a former member of the Wadsworth United Methodist Church, where she was a nursery teacher for over 25 years, and a member of the United Methodist Women. She also participated in senior citizens groups.

 

She is survived by husband, William, whom she married Jan. 29, 1977; sons, Harold J. Nee of Wadsworth, Paul K. Nee of Arvada, Colo.; six grandchildren; 13 great – grandchildren; brothers, Owen Mark of River Styx, Clarence Mark of Akron, Ind.; sisters, Vera Ballard of Lakeland, Fla., Ivy Brown of Kinderhook, N. Y., Viola Nothstein of White Plains, Md., Wava Braun of Seville.

 

The family will receive friends at the Hillard – Cox – Mullaney Funeral Home, 174 N. Lyman St., Wadsworth, Sunday, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p. m., where services will be held Monday, 11 a. m., Rev. Vernel A. Lundeen officiating. Interment Woodlawn cemetery. Contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church Nursery or ACME Lutheran Church Library.

Letters from the Past – March 1903 Mark brothers Letter

This letter was written between two brothers. It sounds like William, the oldest of 12 children, was making changes in his life. His later life is a mystery to me. I have not been able to pin down his death date or place. In this letter he does say he plans to move.

I will only charge you $5.00 for the key The balance $40.36 you will find order enclosed I thank you for kindness This leave me a small amount to go in and out of Debt I am feeling good.

My dearest I’ll just write to you this afternoon to tell you I am well and happy. I hope you are the same. I hope your cold is better. 

 

I have been quite busy all day cleaning and sweeping and making dooll [sic] baby clothes for Odett’s and Marion’s Christmas dolls and I have been popping corn and stringing pop corn to decorate their Christmas tree with. I have a little more work to do before supper but I thought I would begin you letter first. 

 

Tell Mrs. Sears and the girls I wish them a Merry Christmas. I wish the same I’ll tell you when I see you Thursday what your Christmas present is or I’ll tell you over the telephone. well I must go now I’ll finish this later.

 

Well supper is over and my work all done and I am here all alone. I wish you were here with me. Mrs. Hastings just telephoned to me a few minutes ago to come up to the store she has a letter for me. so [sic] I’ll not seal this letter and I’ll tell you who it is from. I am all ready to go but my coat and hat. i [sic] am a going over to Marys [sic] to [sic]. I think I’ll stay there till Hastings come home I get lonesome I am alone all day and evening.

I suppose your [sic] writing to your best betrothed the same as I am. well [sic] Dear I must close with my love and best wishes I remain your own pet. (kisses)  Regina
