Alphabetical Ancestors - M


M is for many different surnames.  If you share one of these names,

M is for these Surnames…



Abraham Mark, 1812 PA – 1872 OH, was my 3rd great grandfather. He married Mary Isabella Heffelfinger in 1839 Wayne Co., OH. They had eight sons: Thomas Jefferson, John, William, Marion, Abraham M., Franklin P., David & Edwin. The four oldest sons served in the Civil War. Thomas Jefferson Mark & John Mark died during the war. William Mark, my 2nd great grandfather, was injured during the war but returned home, married and became the father of fourteen children. Abraham is in Reedsburg Cemetery. Abraham & Mary Isabella have many, many descendants.
Maronge
George Patrick Maronge married Glenda Merrel Fortenberry, daughter of Duviox B & Gussie (Alford) Fortenberry. They had two sons and a daughter.
Massie
In 1934 Otis Charles Massie [b 1912 OH] married Ethel E Good [1912 OH – 1950 OH], daughter of Albert Edward & Elizabeth Lodema (Moore) Good. They had three children: Virginia, Edward & Caroline, all born in OH.
Maurer
Elmer Maurer [b 1899 OH] married Pauline Morrison [1899 OH – 1979 OH], daughter of Seth Benner & Margaret Jane (Gruissy) Morrison. They had five children: Roy, Dale, Jack, Gerald & Joanne. Elmer was an electrician.
McCall
Daniel McCall [b 1860 NY] married Elizabeth Noye. They had six children: Margaret, Martha, Daniel, James, Mary & Patrick. James Joseph McCall [1898 NY – 1944 NY] married Marion Coyle [1900 NY – 1991 AZ], my grand aunt. They had no children. James was a New York City firefighter.
McClendon
David Jackson McClendon [b 1838] married Eliza Jane Smith [1846 – 1919], daughter of Wyatt & Euseba (Fortenberry) Smith. They had two children: Annie and Eugene.
McMillan
David J McMillan [1872 – 1950] married Ola Schilling [1880 – 1954]. They had twelve children: Wallie, Ethel, Ora, Mae, Lloyd, Archie, Velma, Mammie, Rhoda, David, Nadine & Evon.
Messmore
In 1880 Allen G Messmore [b 1830 OH] married Barbary Ritter [1857 OH – 1928], daughter of Isaac & Isabell (Fisher) Ritter. They had six children: David, Ada, Bertha, Oliver, Clyd & Edward, all born in OH.
Miller
In 1836 Frederick Miller [bc 1803 MD] married Barbary Ritter [1810 PA – 1895], daughter of Johannes & Anna Mariah Ritter. They had five children: Elizabeth, Philip, Ari, Mary & Anna, all born in OH.
Miller
Henry C Miller [1847 OH – c 1910] married Mary Catherine Ritter [1853 OH – 1938] in 1870 OH. Mary Catherine was the daughter of Isaac & Isabell (Fisher) Ritter. Their nine children were born in OH: Charles, William, Dora, Harvey, Jonathan, Emma, Anna, James & Russel.
Moore
Peter Jonathan Moore [1857 OH – 1929 OH] married Caroline L Gruissy [1863 OH – 1936 OH]. Caroline was the daughter of Augustus Ceaser & Mary Ann (Everett) Gruissy. Peter was a farmer and brick layer. Their six children were born in OH: Amaline, Lillian Vera, Floyd, Frances, Elizabeth & Ralph.
Morris
George a Morris [1877 – 1943] married Mary Louise Fortenberry [1881 – 1963]. They had seven children: Willie, Boyce, Theodore, Delphin, George, Lank & Pershing.       
Morrison
William Hiram Morrison [b 1830 NY] married Emily Benner [1839 OH – 1908 OH]. William was a shoe maker. They had six children: Thomas, Seth, Eldridge, Emily, Phoeby & Lolly. Their son, Seth Benner Morrison [1861 PA – 1952 OH] married Margaret Jane Gruissy in 1880 in OH. Seth was a farmer and later a paper finisher at Ohio Boxboard Co. They had eight children: Mona, Lena, Emily, Albert, Florence, Paul, Pauline & Peter.
Mowrey
Elizabeth Mowrey [1799 – 1871 OH] was my 4th great grandmother. She was the daughter of Michael & Eve Mowrey. Elizabeth married Philip Heffelfinger [1787 PA – 1877 OH]. I would love to learn more about the Mowrey family.
Daniel Mullane [c 1838 Ireland – 1930 Ireland] was the son of Thomas & Julia (Sullivan) Mullane. He married Brigid English. Their eleven children were bobrn in Ireland: Mary Josephine, Patrick, Thomas, Timothy, Ellen, Margaret, Frances Bridget, Margaret [a second Margaret], Daniel, Julia & Catherine. Daniel was a coach builder in County Tipperary.

Other ‘M’ surnames in my tree: Maley, Mattingly, McCormick, McCraw, McDaniel, McEleveen, Minter, Minton, Mowrer, Mullen & Munoz.

5 April 1931            James Joseph McCall, 1898 – 1944 [son of Daniel & Elizabeth (Noye) McCall] & Marion J. Coyle, 1900 – 1991 [daughter of Michael & Mary Josephine (Mullane) Coyle]. Married in New York City. James was a New York City firefighter.

6 April 1921            Thomas Lynch & Catherine Brady [daughter of Patrick & Ellen (Reilly) Brady]. Married in New Jersey. 3 children.

6 April 1946            Henry Leissinger & Wesley Pierce [daughter of Arlie & Lyda Mearl (Brown) Pierce] 2 children.

8 April 1800            John Frederick Wolf, 1779 – 1872 [son of Johann Jonas & Appollonia (Dick) Wolf]  & Esther Barbara Shaffer, 1777 – 1866. 10 children. They were my 4th great grandparents. They were married for 66 years. 

8 April 1880            Frederick Leser & Louiza Gruissy [daughter of Christian & Mary (Wise) Gruissy]. Married in Ohio. 2 children.

11 April 1950           Bernarr Jessee Reynolds, 1925 – 1995 [son of Thelma Lady Brown]  & Jessis Elizabeth Overby. Married in Oregon. 3 children.

12 April 1947           Joseph W. Balog & Virginia Caroline Moore [daughter of Floyd Bernard & Anna (Slaby) Moore] 

13 April 1871           John William Ritter, 1850 – 1932 [son of Isaac & Isabell (Fisher) Ritter] & Ruth Anna Scott. Married in Ohio. 8 children. John was my second great grand uncle. John was a carpenter. He was married three times.

15 April 1922           Eslie Guy Mark, 1890 – 1972 [son of William & Elidia Rebecca (Ritter) Mark] & Golda Mae Warner. 3 children. They were married for 50 years. 
Eslie Guy & Golda Mae Mark
                               Burbank. Mr and Mrs. Mark of 7660 Garnan Road, Burbank RD will observe their golden wedding anniversary Saturday, April 15.  No special celebration is planned due to the ill health of Mr. Mark. Guy Mark and Golda Warner were married in the Medina M. E. parsonage by the Rev. Wallace H. Bryenton on April 15, 1922.  The Marks lived in Wooster for four years following their wedding and have lived at their present address for the past 46 years.  Mr. Mark was a painter by trade and after retirement bought furs and worked at odd jobs.  He was a charter member of the American Legion Post in Wooster and belonged to the Lodi Post No. 523 for many years. The couple enjoy gardening and flowers and formerly belonged to a garden club.  Mrs. Mark enjoys participating in church work when her health permits.  She is a member of the Lodi American Legion Auxillary. The Marks have one son, Glenn, at home.  Two sons are deceased.

3 March 1916           Timothy J. Horgan & Julia Mullane, 1885 – 1918 [daughter of Daniel & Brigid (English) Mullane]. Married in County Tipperary, Ireland. 2 children. Julia was my great grand aunt. Their marriage was brief because of Julia's death at the age of 32.

4 March 1897           James Elmer Messmore & Emma D. Ritter, 1876 – 1969 [daughter of John William & Ruth Anna (Scott) Ritter]. Married in Ohio.

7 March 1946           James Sheppard, Jr. & Elnora Cutrer [daughter of Isaac Omer & Serena Olivia (Lee) Cutrer].

8 March 1888           Philip M. Creasy, 1867 – 1934 [son of Christian & Mary (Wise) Gruissy] & Mary E. Wasem. 1 son. They were married over 50 years.

9 March 1947           William Alered Huff, 1926 – 1979, & Lucille Marguerite Mark [daughter of Charles Forest & Bertha (Flickinger) Mark]. Married in Ohio. Lucille was my 1st cousin, twice removed.

1830    Jeptha Josephus ALFORD, MD was born in MS, son of Edwin Barksdale & Martha P. (Smith) Brown. He married Fanny Roberts. He is buried in  the Silver Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.

1906    Boyce Boo MORRIS was the son of George A. & Mary Louise (Fortenberry) Morris. He married Carrie Lee. They had four children. Boyce died in 1995.

1840    Thomas Jefferson MARK died in the Civil War. He was born in Ohio, the oldest son of Abraham & Mary Isabella (Heffelfinger) Mark. Thomas was in the 118th Regiment, Company E of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He died 16 January 1863 in Kentucky.

1810    Sarah BROWN was born in Georgia, daughter of Moses BROWN and Sarah ROBERTSON. She married Gasua Chapman Fortenberry. They had nine children. Sarah died in 1883 in Mississippi.
