Oh Family Tree, Oh Family Tree!

Oh Family tree, Oh Family tree!
Thy leaves are so elusive
Oh Family tree, Oh Family tree,
Thy names are always changing
Not only in census reports,
But also in obituaries.
Oh Family tree, Oh Family tree,
Thy names are always changing!

Oh Family tree, Oh Family tree,
Such puzzles do you bring me!
Oh Family tree, Oh Family tree,
You confuse and bewilder me!
For every year this Family tree,
Brings to us such mystery.
Oh Family tree, Oh Family tree,
Such puzzles do you bring me!

Oh Family tree, Oh Family tree,
You'll be ever changing!
A story of our ancestors
You'll be ever changing
Each date and place
Each misspelled name
No one alive spreads tales so well
Oh Family tree, Oh Family tree,
You'll be ever changing.

I had a little fun with this Christmas carol.
Hope it made you smile.

Merry Christmas!

6th Anniversary of Leaves & Branches

Hello & thanks for stopping by.
I wish I could invite you in, offer you a chair & hand you a slice of cake. A blog is nothing without its visitors & followers. I love it when folks stop by, especially when they leave comments. Writing posts can be a lonely procedure but encouraging comments remind us that we are not alone in our interest in our family, our research & our writing.
Thanks very much for your support!

Genealogy Christmas Gifts

Many of us look for methods to share our genealogy findings with the rest of the family. One method I have found is making & giving Family Calendars. Each year the family gets very excited to unwrap the calendar and turn the pages.

When I began making the calendars I wanted two things.

  •     I wanted to be able to add lots of photos on the ‘top’ page of the calendar. I also wanted the ability to add text and seasonal graphics.
  • On the ‘bottom’ page of the calendar I wanted to add family birthdays, anniversaries, upcoming weddings & graduations, etc. I wanted to put photos in the boxes with the birthday and anniversary messages.

The first calendar I made was in 2005 for the 2006 calendar year. I used Kodak Easy Share Gallery to create it. There were few layout options & I could only put four photos on a page. There were no options to write about birthdays in the date boxes on the calendar.

Next I used digi-Labs.net & the calendar looked nice but I wanted more options.  I looked online at many websites before deciding to use My Publisher. I used them for several years until they changed the size of the calendar. I wasn’t happy with the smaller size. I do still use them for making books & am very pleased with them.

Now I use Mixbook. It is very versatile. Some of their styles include: Seasonal, Whimsical, Classic, Vintage, Modern & Instagram. You can make a square or a landscape calendar. I make the 12” x 12” square calendar [which is 12” x 24” when it hangs ope]n. I begin with a blank calendar & do my own layouts & themes.

CALENDAR COVER [above]. Here are examples of covers I made. In 2014 I used photographs of my brothers & I over the years, stickers & text with a quote. This year I am using a single group photo on the cover of the calendar for our children.

TOP PAGES [above]. I use a combination of photos from the preceding year, vintage family photos & seasonal photos to decorate the top section of each calendar month. Mixbook lets you use one photo, none or as many photos as you like. The background can be textured, a solid color, or a graphic. I use something simple because I want the photos to be the star of the page. There are hundreds of stickers, or graphics, at your fingertips. I find that too many graphics take space away from my photos so I use them sparingly. The examples above show my aunt's 80th birthday party, a family tree & our son's wedding.

BOTTOM PAGES [above]. The bottom of each month has the calendar. You can “Manage Events”. In the drop down box you can select holidays you want to include. Then you can add as many birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, vacations, graduations, etc. as you want. The focus of my calendars is my brothers & I so I include any special days that relate to the four of us, our children, grandchildren, our cousins, aunts & uncles, our parents, grandparents, etc. We can all keep track of upcoming birthdays and remember those who went before us. It is possible to add photos in the boxes that have no numbers as well.

My family looking at their new calendars.

I work on these calendars all year long, adding new photos as each month passes. My brothers send me photos and, of course, I carry my camera everywhere. Not only do these calendars share important family events and photos, they are also a record of the family’s previous year’s events.

Do you make any genealogy gifts for your family?

Independence Day!

My husband & I are once again hosting a big family BBQ on the 4th of July! Hurray! It is lots of work and lots of fun. We have a nice screened in porch that is perfect for my uncle, the family patriarch, to sit on a rocker and a big back yard that’s perfect for the younger cousins to run and play. My brothers & cousins all bring a dish to share and my husband is in charge of the grill. There will be lots of laughter; sharing of ‘remember when…’ stories; and, this year, our baby grandson will be passed from one set of loving arms to another.

Each time we gather for Independence Day I set up a family history display of some kind. This year I will focus on our Revolutionary War soldiers: seven of my 5th great grandparents who helped to free us from the British Empire.

I made a trifold display board that includes:

·         A family tree chart from my paternal grandmother going back 5 generations that shows both her Revolutionary War soldiers

·         A family tree chart from my Paternal grandfather going back 5 generations showing his 5 Revolutionary War soldiers

·         An 8x10 Chart for each soldier with his military details

·         The soldiers are numbered, both on the family trees & on the charts, to make it easier for the family to understand how each soldier is related to them.

I will make some copies of this information for those who want to take it home.

Whatever you do to celebrate, remember those who made the day & our country possible.

Sepia Saturday: Men & Cars

This week's Sepia Saturday photo of cars reminds me of a photo in my archives, taken probably in the early 1960s.

My father (Delbert Brown) & his brothers always loved cars.
They posed by these cars for this unique photo of all five brothers,
 standing in order of age.

Surname Christmas Tree

Oh, Christmas Tree!

Here is my surname tree as suggested by Randy Seaver at Gena-Musings. I did not finish in time for Saturday Night Genealogy Fun but, even a day later, it was still fun to do. Visit Randy's blog and then give it a try.

My four grandparents comprise the trunk of my tree. From there things spread out in many directions just as they do in my research.

Genealogy Fun

Last Saturday, Randy Seaver made a fun suggestion on his blog, Genea-Musings. He posts fun suggestions on Saturdays.

Randy gave a link to Image Chef and he showed some of the fun genealogy graphics he was able to make at the web site. I decided to follow Randy's lead. Here are some of the graphics I came up with:

I used a photo of my great grandparents, Michael & Mary Jo Coyle for this wanted poster.

I'll have to use this newspaper graphic in a future post when I come with a great find.

A good reminder written in the sand.
Hopefully our stories are recorded somewhere that is a little safer!

This taxi graphic is good for a 'Travel Tuesday' post.

Family Treasure: Tiny Tea Time

It has been a long time since I spent a day playing with tiny tea sets. But today I have been sorting, washing and photographing several sets of teapots, cups, saucers, etc. I didn't clean them up because I was expecting a young visitor. I am working on my New Year's resolution to inventory our family treasures.

These little things are not treasures because of any monetary value. Rather, they bring back memories of tea parties. I loved to dress my dolls in their best dresses and share imaginary pots of tea.

My daughters loved to play tea party time. While they dressed their dolls and gathered their teddy bears I checked the cabinets for tiny food like Cheerios, Fruit Loops, M&Ms, or Goldfish crackers. While my girls put the dolls in a circle, some on small chairs, I made lemonade to serve as our tea. I filled the tea pots and they filled the tiny cups.

We had many hours of fun. My son never liked tea parties much. He would like the treats but get bored quickly and head off to build with Legos or race his Hot Wheels.

Our tea sets are all together now & it is hard to remember which sets were mine or my daughters'. I'll have to rely on their memories to help me out with that.

There are a half a dozen more sets than I have posted here. They have all been cleaned, photographed & carefully wrapped in tissue paper. Who knows when party time will come again?

Happy Blog Anniversary to Leaves & Branches!

On September 3, 2010 I sent out my first blog post. I wanted to reach out to others who might be related to my family tree and who would be willing to share & compare information. My daughter, Alyssa, helped me set up my blog. I was both nervous and excited as I made decisions about the layout, title & the first post.

One of the best things that has happened over the years has been the connection with GeneaBloggers! I have been entertained & educated & challenged to improve by Thomas MacEntee and fellow members of this great group.

An unexpected perk has been making blogging buddies like Charlie, Wendy & Cheri. They are always willing to encourage & give suggestions & just be friendly.

I have made some connections with distant family members. I hope to find even more. Maybe I'll discover that one person who just happens to have a trunk full of original family documents and a pile of ancient photo albums! ha!

Meanwhile, it is time for a slice of cake, a glass of wine and a look back at how far I've come.

Funny - Take a Seat

I found the perfect garden bench for the genealogist!
Sit & relax with a book of family history or gather the family around the bench for photos.

Recently my daughter & I went to the College of Dupage, Illinois to see an exhibit at the Cleve Carney Art Gallery. We saw this bench in the garden and I had to snap a photo to share with other genealogists.

NGS Conference - More to Learn!

Marriott Entrance

Day #3 at the NGS Conference
was brief but I'll explain that momentarily.

I should explain that I did not stay at a local hotel for the conference. I stayed with our oldest daughter & our son in law in Manassas & drove to the conference each day. That meant getting up about 4/4:30 each morning & driving south on I95. Therefore I was tired & my first stop was the purchasing of caffeine at the Starbucks inside the Marriott each morning. The line was usually long and most people patiently waiting their turn were wearing their NGS name tags on the white & green lanyards. No matter the hour they were ready to talk about cemeteries or military records or archives. Try that in your local coffee shop and see how many people want to make eye contact with you. ha!

My first session was:
  • The Virginia Militia, Craig Scott
The session began at 8:00 and Mr. Scott arrived a half an hour early to set up his projector, laptop & get his power point ready to go. Many of the presenters did this but Craig was eager for questions and encouraged us to call out questions as he set things up. He is not a shy person 7 soon our sleepy morning group stirred ourselves, started asking for tips and woke up to his booming voice. This was followed by laughter and soon the presentation began with a definition of the Virginia Militia:

From there we were off for a very quick hour full of information.

In addition to the lively session I was happy to be joined in the session by fellow blogging buddy, Wendy from Jollett Etc. We had corresponded for some time but this was our first face to face. I don't think I  am exaggerating when I say it was friendship at first sight!

I regret to say that I had to leave after that one session of Firday because of a family emergency.

I was very glad I was able to attend the sessions that I did. I learned many new things & am anxious to put it all in action..
