 My great uncle Clarence W. Mark shared this photograph with me. Clarence is in the center of the photograph, standing with two of his sister's sons. Probably taken in the early 1940s in Ohio. I love how young they all look.

My Nana was one of the most important people in my life.  I knew her as my mother's mother.  She loved my brothers and me immensly. Looking at vintage photographs like this one I get a glimpse at her life before my mother or I were born. I love her lacy dress and those huge bows in her hair.

Vintage Photograph: Kathleen G. Coyle

 This studio photograph is wonderful. I believe it was taken for Kathleen's First Holy Communion. She is holding a prayer book in one hand and flowers in the other. Her lacy dress is topped off with flowers in her hair. 

My great aunt's birthday is coming soon, on Halloween. The family called her 'Billie.' She had an independent spirit. She lived to be 91, outliving her siblings and her niece (my mom).  She was a private person and shared limited family stories. 

I like this photo of her as a young girl. I wish I could step into this photo and talk to her.

Vintage Photograph, 1930 OH, Mark Family

 This vintage photograph is terrific. We get a peek at the farm, the car and the family in Ohio. Looking at little Wava, b 1919, can help to date this. Maybe it was late 1920s or early 1930s. It looks casual, with Owen sitting on the car but the brothers are wearing ties. I guess it was a Sunday morning with them dressed for church. 

Three sisters are not in the photograph: Isabel Esther Mark Nee m 1922, Vera Mark Ballard m 1933 and Ivy Mark Brown m 1927. Did one of those sisters take the photo?

Vintage Photograph: Coyle Sisters

 This is a wonderful vintage photograph. I love the studio background, the pretty dresses and, most of all my Nana and two of her sisters. For many years this photograph lived in a large wooden chest. The chest sat on the landing at the top of the steep stairs at my Nana's house. From there the chest of assorted treasures moved to my mother's house. I have the chest in my bedroom now with quilts carefully folded on top. I have moved the photograph into an archival safe box. Putting this in my blog will help the digital version live on.

Vintage Photograph: Thomas A. Coyle

Thomas was my maternal grandmother's brother.  There were seven children in the family and only two boys. The first boy, Francis Patrick Coyle, died before he reached two years old. Thomas had five sisters to contend with. His father, Michael Coyle, left the family and then Thomas was the only male. Thomas also left. He may have gotten in with a bad group of young men. In this vintage photograph my great uncle looks like a charming little boy. If you can tell me more about Thomas, I'd be delighted to hear from you.

I wonder how often these five sisters got together. Was this a yearly gathering? Was there a special reason they all came together?
