Forget Me Not: Isabell Mark Nee Ream, 1984 OH

 Isabell was the sister of my paternal grandmother, Ivy R. Mark Brown. We visited her in Ohio when I was young. I remember her many pretty knick knacks. My brothers and I were cautioned by our parents to be careful of the fragile objects. I remember she had a mirror in her bedroom. She cut our pictures of flowers from cards and adhered them all around the mirror. As a little girl, I thought it was beautiful.

Wadsworth – Isabell E. (Nee) Ream, 80, died March 9 at the Wadsworth Health Care Center after a lengthy illness.

 

Mrs. Ream was born in Medina County and resided in the Wadsworth – Seville area most of her life. She was Wadsworth Township Clerk for eight years, and a member of ACME Lutheran Church. She was a former member of the Wadsworth United Methodist Church, where she was a nursery teacher for over 25 years, and a member of the United Methodist Women. She also participated in senior citizens groups.

 

She is survived by husband, William, whom she married Jan. 29, 1977; sons, Harold J. Nee of Wadsworth, Paul K. Nee of Arvada, Colo.; six grandchildren; 13 great – grandchildren; brothers, Owen Mark of River Styx, Clarence Mark of Akron, Ind.; sisters, Vera Ballard of Lakeland, Fla., Ivy Brown of Kinderhook, N. Y., Viola Nothstein of White Plains, Md., Wava Braun of Seville.

 

The family will receive friends at the Hillard – Cox – Mullaney Funeral Home, 174 N. Lyman St., Wadsworth, Sunday, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p. m., where services will be held Monday, 11 a. m., Rev. Vernel A. Lundeen officiating. Interment Woodlawn cemetery. Contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church Nursery or ACME Lutheran Church Library.

My Aunt’s 1942 Autograph Book

My first cousin kindly shared his mother’s 1942 Autograph Book with me. The book belonged to Genevieve Audry (Brown) Wieland Schaperjahn. It was given to her by her aunt and uncle, Roy Edward & Isabell Esther Mark Nee.

Genevieve, her parents and her siblings had lived in Wayne County, Ohio but moved to Columbia County, New York circa 1940/41. 

The book was signed by many of her Ohio relatives as well as her family and friends in New York. It is wonderful to see the handwriting, messages & signatures of many family members.

·      “Paul” cousin, Paul Kenneth Nee, b 1934. Wrote: I love you little. I love you big. I love you like a little pig. 

·      “Your Aunt Blanche & Uncle Owen” Owen Andrew & Blanche Bowers Mark. Wrote: 1942 Dear Genevieve: - We think of you quite often, You think of us we know, And we just thought ‘twould be kinder nice to write & tell you so. 

      "Uncle Clarence" Clarence William Mark, 1917 - 2006. Wrote: Genevieve Autry Brown took her hat and went to town, the wind blew strong and hard, her hat flew up and landed in the yard.

·      “Jeanette Brown” Genevieve’s sister, Jeanette Rose Brown Sparks Wager, 1934 – 1986. Wrote: Dec. 26, 1942 The valley is green. The hills are bare. I love you and I hope you care.

·      “Leo Brown” her brother, Leo Dwight Brown, 1930 – 2017. Wrote: I love coffee. I love tea. I love the girls and they love me.

·      “Dad”  Roy Jessie Brown, 1902 – 1956. Wrote: To my little fat stuff. Genevieve, The sea is wide and you can’t step it. I love you and you can’t help it.

Christmas Gift for my Dad, 1939 OH

This book was a gift to my father,

for Christmas 1939.

Fortunately, my Great Aunt Wava wrote in the front of the book, signing  and dating it.

At that time my father was 11 years old. His aunt was 20. They were both living in Ohio. A year later, my grandparents moved their family to New York State. They had a large extended family in Ohio; through Ivy Regina Mark Brown, my grandmother. My grandmother must have missed her family terribly. My father talked about his Ohio relatives and we visited Ohio a few times when my brothers and I were small. 

The book, Beautiful Stories of the Bible, was printed in 1937.

There are several black & white illustrations. It is well worn.

Nee

Roy Edward Nee [1878 – 1963] was the son of Henry and Matilda Nee. Roy was married three times. In 1922 he married Isabell Esther Mark [1903 – 1984] in OH. They had two sons, Harold and Paul. Harold served in the Army during World War II. He had four children.

Newell

Edward Newell [b 1873 OH] married Cora Bell Mark [1872 OH – 1905 OH]. They were married in Ohio in 1892. In 1900 Edward was a day laborer in Wooster. They had two daughters: Edna & Maude. Cora was only 32 when she died.

Nichols

Willis L Nichols [b 1869 OH] married Rephenia Cathern Gruissy [1870 OH – 1943 MI]. They had one son, Richard Ray Nichols [b 1886 OH]. They were married c 1891 and by 1900 were living in Michigan. Willis was a carpenter. He & Rephenia also collected and sold seashells to button makers. Rephenia was well known in the family for her large size, her wonderful sense of humor and for smoking cigars. She was my great grand aunt.

Nonnemaker

Jacob Noonemaker married Anna Margaretha Ritter [b 1776 PA]. They had two children: Maria Elizabeth [b 1794 PA] & Johanas [b 1800 PA].

Norris

Charles Edwin Norris married Ethel May Miller [b 1893 OH], daughter of Charles Henry & Effie Belle Miller. They had two children: Raymond Lemoin [b 1913] and Viola May [b 1915].

Nothstein

Raymond Alexander Nothstein [1914 PA – c 1987], son of William D & Bessie Nothstein, married Viola Cathern Mark [1913 OH – 2004 FL]. They were married in 1935 in OH and had four children. In 1940 Raymond was a laborer in Summit Co, OH.

Sepia Saturday - Family Picnic in Ohio

This week's Sepia Saturday photograph shows ladies having a picnic on the grass. That reminded me of photographs of picnics at my Grand Aunt Wava's house in Ohio. She & Uncle Alvin had a terrific old farm house with a long porch along the side. Many family picnics were held on the farm. Aunt Wava & Uncle Alvin had warm hearts and always welcomed family. They loved to host gatherings when we folks from New York State came to visit. There would be a long table in the house that could barely hold the weight of all the home made food. There would be people scattered through the yard holding plates full of food and catching up with the family news.

Second from the left is my great grandfather, Thomas K Mark. He was my father's maternal grandfather.

Here is the same farm house in 1993 with my children playing together. My father, my children & I were visiting & I was collecting genealogy information & copying family photographs.

Census Sunday - The Thomas K. Mark family in the 1940 US Census

State & National Census Reports are filled with information for genealogists. Both the population & nonpopulation schedules give us insights into the lives of our ancestors. What have you found that is Surprising? Reassuring? Bewildering?

Thomas K. & N. Regina (Gruissy) Mark were my great grandparents on my father’s side. They lived their lives and raised their seven children in rural Ohio. I’ve been able to find them and all their children in the 1940 census records. On 3 May 1940, when they were visited by a census taker, they were living at 181 Bergey Street, Wadsworth in Medina County. They owned their own home which was valued at $1,200. Thomas had been both a farmer and a carpenter. About 1930 he had an awful accident while working which badly injured his back. The 1940 census reports that he was unable to work although he had worked for 50 weeks the previous year. We can wonder if the inability to work was due to his injuries or due to the lack of available carpentry jobs. [SD 23, ED 52-25, sheet 27A]

Thomas and Regina had both of their sons and one of their daughters still living at home. Owen, 24, and Clarence, 22, were both working 40 hours a week at the match factory. Wava, 21, was working 36 hours a week as a housekeeper in a private home. Although their parents had not, all three siblings had completed four years of high school.

Oldest daughter, Isabell, was married and also living in Wadsworth. Her husband, Roy E Nee was a janitor in a recreational hall. Their sons, Harold J. and Paul H. were in school. [SD 23, ED 52-24, Sheet 11B]

Daughter, Vera, was also in Medina County. She and her husband, R. Ballard, were living on Washington Street in Seville. Vera’s husband was a mechanic and she was a nurse in training at the hospital. [SD 23, ED 52-4, Sheet 6B]

Daughter, Ivy, was living in Rittman, Wayne County. Her husband, Roy Brown, was a millwright at the paper mill. Ivy had six children: Delbert, Leo, Genevieve, Jeanette, Larry Lee and Robert. [SD 16, ED 85-29, Sheet 15A]

Daughter, Viola was living in Norton Twp., Summit County. Her husband, Raymond Nothstein, was a laborer. Viola had three children at that time: Loyal, Norbert and Benita. [SD 23, ED 77-67, Sheet 9A]

It was fun to find all these members of the family. In later years there would be changes: moves to other states, more grandchildren, new jobs. However, in 1940, although four of the daughters were married, they all still lived fairly close to each other and, according to family stories, visited each other often.

1745       Richard DILLON was born in Norfolk, Virginia, son of James Theopilous & Mary Dillon. They were married about 1776. They were my 5x great grandparents. They had eight children. Richard died in Mississippi in 1833.
