Wedding: Fortenberry & Ellzey, 2 Sept. 1932 MS

 This brief announcement tells us about a new marriage in the family that includes both our Fortenberry & Brumfield families. It also includes the Ellzey family, which often married into our direct family lines. Besides giving me their wedding date, it teaches me that Alton was a teacher, like me.

Tylertown – Services for Roger T. Ellzey Sr., 76, pioneer businessman, were held at 10 a. m. Saturday from the Tylertown Baptist Church with burial in the city cemetery.

 

Ellzey, a lifelong Walthall area resident, died Thursday night at his home here. He established the Ellzey Building Co. at Tylertown in 1911 and was in business at this company until 1944 when he sold it to hiss son, Wayland Ellzey. 

 

He leaves his widow, Mrs. Molly Branch Ellzey; three daughters, Mrs. Gertrude McKinney of Jackson, Mrs.  Bertile Fortenberry of Osyka, and Mrs. Mary Ellen Carlisle of Louisville, Ky.

 

Three other sons, Thomas Ellzey of Tylertown, Cecil Ellzey of Franklinton and Charles Ellzey of Bridgeton, N. J. 

 

Three sisters, Mrs. Myrtle Fortenberry of McComb, Mrs. Mamie E. Minton of Denham Springs, La., and Mrs. Lois Pope of Magnolia; four brothers, Edgar Ellzey of Franklinton, La., Vernon Ellzey of Rochester, N. Y., Grady Ellzey of Osyka, and Clyde Ellzey of Morestown, N. J.; 12 grandchildren and 12 great – grandchildren.

 

Dr. Clayton Sullivan of Hattiesburg conducted last rites.

 

Ginn Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Forget Me Not: S. Rayleen (Brown) Hall, 2006 MS

It wasn’t until the early 1990s that I learned my paternal grandfather, Roy Jessie Brown, had been married before he married my grandmother, Ivy R. (Mark) Brown. My father, Delbert K. Brown, told me he had a half-sister in Mississippi. He visited Rayleen in 1993. After his visit Rayleen & I began a correspondence. In May 1994 Rayleen and her daughter, Bonnie, came to stay at our house in NY. It was wonderful to meet them; to introduce them to the rest of the local Brown family; and to begin a relationship with them. In the summer of 1997 my husband and I and our children visited Rayleen and family in Mississippi. They showed us the famous southern hospitality and introduced us to many family members there. Rayleen and I continued to correspond. We exchanged Christmas cards, birthday cards and letters for many years. We discovered that we both liked to quilt. She was a gracious, funny and loving lady.

Sylvia Rayleen Brown Hall, 82, of the Silver Creek community, died June 15, 2006, at Beecham Memorial Hospital in Magnolia. Visitation is 5 to 9 tonight at Silver Creek Baptist Church. Services will be at 10 a. m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Jimmy Smith officiating. Burial will be in Silver Creek Cemetery. Capps Funeral Home in Tylertown is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Hall was born March 5, 1924, in Slidell, La. She was the daughter of Roy Brown and Mary Ellzey Goings. She was retired and was the first woman to serve on the Pike County Board of Supervisors, elected in 1983. She also owned and operated a country store and was a homemaker. For most of her life, she was an active member of Silver Creek Baptist Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher, vacation Bible school teacher, church hostess and church clerk for many years. Mrs. Hall was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jesse Miles Hall, a former Pike County supervisor; and a brother. Survivors include a sister and brother-in-law, Jackie and Paul Boatner of Clinton; five children, Sylvia Alford of Abilene, Texas, Billy Hall, Cecil Hall and his wife Barbara, the Rev. Wayne Hall and his wife Jeanette, all of Magnolia and Bonnie Hall of McComb; several grandchildren, Duane and Wade Alford, Deanna Laciura, Diane Welch, Angela McNabb, James Hall and Dr. Stephanie Hall; 12 great – grandchildren and many other relatives and friends. Pallbearers are George Garner, James Hall, Brandon Meyers, Wayne Meyers, Jesse Stitman and Austin Tolar. Honorary pallbearers are deacons of Silver Creek Baptist Church.

Funeral services for Mrs. Ammie [sic] Myrtis Ellzey Fortenberry, 88, will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday Navilla Baptist Church.

 

Mrs. Fortenberry died at 7:16 p. m. Tuesday at her residence in the Homestead community following a lengthy illness.

 

Born Dec. 24, 1883 in Osyka, she was the daughter of the late Billy Frank and Mary Elizabeth Ballus Ellzey.

Mrs. Bertha Fortenberry Ellzey. Services for Mrs. Bertha Fortenberry Ellzey, age 95, Columbia were at 2:00 P. M. Saturday, March 26, 1988 at Silver Springs Baptist Church near McComb, Miss., with Rev. Joel Stroud and Rev. Joe Lovelady officiating. Burial was in Silver Spring Cemetery under the direction of Hartman Funeral Home in McComb, Miss.

 

Mrs. Ellzey died Thursday, March 24, 1988 at Caldwell Memorial Hospital in Columbia following a lengthy illness.

 

Mrs. Ellzey was a native of Osyka. Miss. She was the widow of the late Grady H. Ellzey and was a homemaker.

 

Survivors include one son, Wesley P. Ellzey, Alexandria, two daughters: Mrs. Odean E. Simmons of Columbia, Mrs. Ellen E. McDaniel of Yadkinville, N. C., 11grandchildren, 12 great – grandchildren and one great – great – grandchild.

American Legion Forms in Pike Co., MS 1919

This is one of my favorite types of newspaper articles because it includes names from several branches of our family. This one includes: Alford, Brumfield, Ellzey, Fortenberry & Ott family members. This is also useful to identify men from our family who served in World War I. Veterans' Day seems the perfect time to publish this list of WWI soldiers.

Read my endnotes to learn more about those men I was able to identify. 

 

Pursuant to call issued by J. H. Price, Jr., delegate to National caucus, a meeting of soldiers, sailors and marines convened at the Pike county court house at 2 o’clock Saturday afternoon, June 21^st, 1919, and organized by the Pike County Post of the American Legion. Temporary were elected as follows: K. G. Price, McComb, chairman; Thomas Cotton, Summit, vice-chairman; Van H. Weathersby, secretary and treasurer.

 

Although this was the first attempt that has been made to organize a Post of the American Legion in Pike county, a great deal of enthusiasm was manifested by those present, and plans were perfected for organizing Posts over the entire county, the desire being expressed that every soldier, sailor or marine who had served honorably during the war should become a member of his local post.

 

The only credentials required of a candidate to make him eligible for membership to the American Legion is his honorable discharge, and fifteen or more such members can organize a local post and obtain a charter from the National organization.

 

The following committees on membership were appointed for the purpose of organizing posts at the various places in the county, and they are urged to do this at once as it is desired that as many Posts as possible be organized by July 12^th. In addition thereto, it was decided to have a general meeting or rally, inviting every soldier, sailor or marine in the county. The time and place of this rally to be the same as the celebration which will be given the soldiers by the Council of Defense. The time and place will be announced later.

 

The following is a list of committees on memberships, and they are urged to perfect their organizations without delay, and are requested to apply to the chairman or secretary for information.

Quilting Party – Progress, MS 1949

I was happy to find this newspaper article for several reasons. First, I was happy because it includes members of our Fortenberry family. Those Fortenberry ladies were helping a neighbor who had experienced a fire and lost her belongings. It is nice to know our family members were helping others. Also, I was happy to read this because I am a quilter. I have made many quilts for family & friends. Now I know that it is a long standing family tradition.

 

The ladies of Silver Springs W. M. U. enjoyed a quilting party at the home of Mrs. L. Q. Fortenberry Jan. 18. Two quilts were quilted for a neighbor who had lost her home and furnishings by fire. A bountiful dinner was served at the noon hour. Those present were:

Forget Me Not: William Jasper Smith, 1950 MS

What I like about this obituary, as a genealogist, is that William is a 'Pike Native' and was from an "outstanding pioneer" family. Those clues showed me he was one of 'our' Smiths. My research taught me that our Smith family was in the area by 1808. Pike County, MS was formed in 1815. William's great grandparents, Jeremiah & Joanna, moved there from Lancaster District, South Carolina. According to tradition they moved their belongings in a cart.

William's first wife, Martha Aner Alford, 1867 - 1926, was my first cousin 3x removed. She was the daughter of Junius Newton Alford & Mary Margaret Brumfield. They had 7 children.

Services Sunday for Resident of Biloxi for the Past 26 Years

William Jasper Smith a native of Pike County where his forbearers were among the outstanding pioneer families, succumbed at 12:15 p. m. Friday, March 31 at his residence in Biloxi, where he had lived for the past 26 years.

Mr. Smith was 88 years of age, having been born Feb. 7, 1862, in the community known as Smithburg, in Pike County. He ws the son of the late William Jeremiah and Rachel Ellzey Smith.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at two o’clock, from Silver Springs Baptist Church, with Rev. C. P. Jones conducting, and Rev. F. W. Gunn of Poplarville assisting. The deceased had been a member of the Baptist faith for 65 years, the past 24 years of which he had been affiliated with First Baptist Church of Biloxi.

Masonic Rites Given

He was a Mason, belonging to Rising Glory Lodge of Osyka. Rites of the fraternal order were administered at graveside, with Masons also serving as pallbearers.

He married Miss Aner Alford in December, 1889, and six children were born to the union. His first wife preceded him in death by many years, and he married Miss Eva Boldt in Biloxi in October, 1924.

Surviving are three daughters,

Mrs. J. A. Ott and

Mrs. D. C. Siler, both of Osyka;

a son, E. C. Smith, Osyka; [Eugene C. Smith, 1891 MS - 1969]

a half-sister, Mrs. J. D. Rimes, Picayune;

six grandchildren,

seven great grandchildren

and many other relatives.

Burial was in Silver Springs Cemetery with Hartman Funeral Home in charge of services.

Civil War Soldiers Honored, Smith Brothers, 1999 MS

The idea of honoring Confederate soldiers is not socially acceptable at this time. However, in 1999 these young men were honored for their service which had resulted in their deaths in 1862. Although the idea of slavery is detestable, service did not always mean support of slavery. Whatever their reasons for serving, these men were a part of our family  and this newspaper article documents their lives. William & Newton are featured in the article because their service resulted in their deaths. Another brother, Arnold Jasper Smith, was also killed in 1862.

William J. and Newton Smith will be honored at 11 a. m. Sunday, May 8, 137 years after their deaths in the Civil War. The Sons of the Confederate Veterans of Louisiana and Mississippi will remember the Smiths, sons of Wyatt and Euseba Fortenberry Smith of Silver Springs. 

 

Memorial markers have been placed in the cemetery and will be dedicated along with ones honoring their brother-in-law, John S. Ellzey and another relative, Rankin Smith, who was raised by Wyatt and Euseba Smith.

 

The cemetery is five miles north of Mount Hermon, or three miles south of Progress, on Progress – Mount Hermon Road.

 

The public is invited to the dedication ceremonies, which will include authentically attired Confederate living historians firing rifle salutes, as well as the unveiling of the markers. A covered dish dinner will follow in the fellowship hall of Silver Springs Baptist Church.

Keith Alford's 1st Birthday, 1943 MS

This delightful newspaper article about a little boy's first birthday is packed with genealogy information. It gives information on his parents, grandparents and a great grandmother.

Keith Alford, young son of Captain and Mrs. P. K. Alford, will be on year old Tuesday, January 26, and in celebration of the event, his mother invited members of the immediate family to visit with them for the day Sunday. All enjoyed a delicious dinner together at this time. The dinner was served at the home of Keith’s great grandmother, Mrs. Sam Woodruff, at the Woodruff home where Mrs. Alford and son have an apartment. Guests for the event, in addition to Keith’s mother, his grandmother, Mrs. Vera Dodds, and great grandmother, Mrs. Woodruff, were Mr. and Mrs. George H. Alford of Progress, paternal grandparents, and Mrs. Mildred Ellzey, aunt of the little boy.

Young Keith was born after his father, Captain Percy K. Alford, left the United States for service with the Marine Corps for duty across the seas. Captain Alford has not yet had the privilege of seeing his fine young son.

The death of Mrs. Lillian Ellzey Fortenberry, last Tuesday night, came as a shock to her many friends in the county. She was one of the beloved members of the Silver Springs church and was well known throughout county as one of its most devout Christians. She was the wife of Mr. L. Q. Fortenberry and was the mother of six children: E. J. of Colorado; Devoix, New Orleans; Hendrix, U. S. Navy; Mrs. Charles Ott, Mt. Herman, La.; Mrs. Ralph Simmons of Baton Rouge, La. Ten grandchildren also survive. Internment was in the Silver Springs Cemetery Thursday fternoon, with the Rev. Clyde Jones, F. W. Gunn, Kelly Fortenberry, McGehee and J. C. Pinson fficiating.

Former Pike County Man Buried at Magnolia

Monday – End Came at Hospital at Jackson

William J. Fortenberry, a former resident of Smithburg, was buried at Magnolia Monday morning at ten o’clock. His death occurred in a Jackson hospital Saturday afternoon. The Rev. Mr. Lane of McComb, the Rev. Mr. Gunn of Osyka and the Rev. Mr. Davis of Tylertown conducted the services. 

Mr. Fortenberry was a member of the Baptist Church, a devoutly religious man of high ideals and principals. He was at one time a member of the Pike County Board of Supervisors. At the time of his death he was 74 years old.

He is survived by seven sons and four daughters. The sons are: W. [Jimmie Wanzie?] Fortenberry of Jackson, F. E. [Ferman Esco] Fortenberry of Osyka, E. V. [Victor Eurel] Fortenberry of Monticello, Dr. A. J. [Andrew Jackson] Fortenberry of Natchez, S. D. [Burrell Sheldon?] Fortenberry of Atlanta, and C. L. [Charlie Lane] Fortenberry of Monticello [not listed, Henry Glen Fortenberry].  The daughters are: Mrs. O. L. Summers of Greenville, Mrs. J. C. Denman of Franklin, La., Mrs. A. M. Doods of Jackson, Miss., and Mrs. Henry Steinbemer of Little Rock, Arkansas.

The body will be sent from the Tom E. Taylor Funeral Home this morning to Magnolia, where funeral and internment will be held at 10 o’clock. Rev. Gunn officiating from the Baptist Church, assisted by Rev. Lane and Rev. Davis.

The Clarion-Ledger of Jackson, MS, 4 March 1928 also lists the sons but includes G. H. Fortenberry of Natchez.

Note: I have theses daughters: Lelia Pauline Fortenberry, Myrtis Jane Elizabeth Fortenberry, Sarah Louise Fortenberry and Mittie Terell Fortenberry.  If you can match those names to the married names above I'd like to hear from you!
