Taking Time to Locate a Tombstone

Recently my husband & I drove from our home in the Albany, NY area to a family wedding

near Columbus, OH. Most of our route was west on Interstate 90 through the Mohawk Valley region, past the Finger Lakes and on to western New York before a brief drive through Pennsylvania and into Ohio. While we made our plans for the wedding I did a little genealogy research, naturally!

LeopoldGartner/Gardner, my great grandfather, lived his final years in Buffalo, NY. He lived with his daughter, Florence Gartner Weisberg/Weissberg. I had discovered where he was buried but had never visited his grave. Because we were going to be driving through Buffalo I thought a quick stop was in order.

I found North Park Cemetery on Find A Grave but, as I often find with Find A Grave, there was no street address. I found the website for the JewishFederation for Greater Buffalo, found their community directory and called the number for cemetery information. The woman I spoke to quickly and efficiently gave me the street address and advice on where to park. She also gave me the location of the graves of Leopold, his daughter Florence, and her husband Samuel. I was nervous that it might not be as easy as it sounded and that we would be delayed on our long drive to Ohio. However, it went smoothly.

Ironically, for three years my husband & I had lived just a few miles from the cemetery. At that time I had not begun genealogy research and had no idea my great grandfather was close by.

We easily found Leopold, Florence & Samuel. I snapped more pictures than necessary, took a moment for prayer and we were soon on our way again. When we arrived at the hotel and greeted cousins no one was surprised at all that we had stopped off to do genealogy along the way!

[Later I added my photos & information to Find A Grave. They are now the only interments listed for that cemetery.]

Sepia Saturday - Signs

 This week’s Sepia Saturday photograph focuses on signs on buildings. It reminded me of two family photos that were taken c 1925.

Weissberg Furriers

386 Grant Street, Buffalo, NY

This Fur Store was owned by Frank Samuel Weissberg, son of Morris Weissberg & Rose Bankin, and Florence Gartner, daughter of Leopold Gartner and Fannie Edelstein.  Florence was my Grand Aunt, sister of my maternal grandfather. Frank was born in Austria and Florence was born in New York City where they met and married on 27 January 1907.[1] By 1910 they were living in Buffalo, NY.[2]

The 1925 New York State Census shows the family at 386 Grant Street, Buffalo.[3] Frank was a furrier. This is the location shown in the photographs, as evidenced by the signs.

I am very happy they took the time to pose in front of their store with the signs behind them. Frank & Florence then posed their sons and even the dog in front of the store.

C Prentice Waldo [b 1853 OH] married Emma Wolf [1863 OH – 1933 OH], daughter of John Franklin & Carol Orwig Wolf. Prentice & Emma had four children: Lydia, Winfred, Wayland & Blake. In 1900 Prentice was a butcher in Medina County, OH. In 1920 he was a farmer in the same location.

Golda Mae Warner [1902 OH – 1982 OH] married Eslie Guy Mark [1890 OH – 1972 OH]. They were married in 1922. Eslie Guy served in World War I. They had three sons: Guy, Glenn & Dana. Son, Guy, was killed in World War II. In 1920 Eslie Guy was a trapper. In 1930 he was a laborer at odd jobs.

Weissberg/Weisberg

Morris & Rose Weissberg came from Austria with their son, Frank Samuel Weissberg [1878 Austria – 1940 NY]. Frank married Florence Gartner in 1907 NY City. Soon after they moved to Buffalo, NY where Frank was a tailor & furrier. He & Florence had two sons: Milton and Francis. Milton was a lawyer. Florence was my grand aunt.

Wilson

Thomas Clarence Wilson [1888 MS – 1974] married Euna Clarabelle Fortenberry [b 1894]. They had 11 children: Thelma, Alton, Clarence, Edna, Arnell, Evelyn, Thomas, Walter, Juanita, Everett & Elvera. In 1920 they lived in LA where Thomas worked at an oil refinery.

Wolf/Wolff/Wolfe

My paternal grandmother’s family reaches back to the Wolf family in Germany. The family moved to Pennsylvania and later to Ohio. Johannes Peter & Susanna Wolf were my 7^th great grandparents. Their son, Johan Jacob Wolf was b 1694 in Germany. He married Anna Barbara Orth. They had eleven children. Their son, Johann Jonas Wolf [1739 PA – 1787 PA] married Appollonia Dick c 1761. They had ten children. The Wolf family quickly expanded in the USA. They were farmers & soldiers in our wars.

Amanuensis Monday – 1940 letter

An Amanuensis is a person employed to write what another dictates or to copy what has been written by another. Amanuensis Monday is a daily blogging theme from Geneabloggers which encourages the family historian to transcribe family letters, journals, audiotapes, and other historical artifacts. Not only do the documents contain genealogical information, the words breathe life into kin – some we never met – others we see a time in their life before we knew them.

This letter concerns the birth of my maternal grandfather, Nathaniel Gardner. I have never found a birth certificate for him but I am fortunate that this letter has been saved in the family for 73 years. It is signed by his father, Leopold Gartner/Gardner. Leopold, a retired tailor, had moved from New York City to Buffalo between 1930 & 1935 to live with his daughter, Florence and her family.

Besides being evidence of my grandfather’s birth it also tells me that his mother, Fanny Edelstein, had died before this was written.

In addition the letter is signed by Milton S. Weisberg. Milton, an attorney in Buffalo, NY, was the grandson of Leopold and nephew of Nathaniel.

Although it is a short letter is holds any clues to my Gartner/Gardner and Weisberg family. I have it preserved in an archival safe sheet protector in an archival safe box and I have a scanned digital copy.

12 Genealogy Mysteries I’d like to Solve

In honor of today’s date, 12/12/12, here are 12 questions I’d like to answer about my various family branches. If you have suggestions on how I should proceed, I’d like to hear from you.

1.       What happened to my great grandfather, MichaelCoyle? He was a baker in NYC who left his wife and family about 1927.

2.       What is the service record for Thomas Coyle, son of Michael. I have photographs of him in his sailor uniform but can find no records. I believe he lied about his age because he was too young to join up in World War One.

3.       What happened to my Gardner/Weisberg cousins? I have two second cousins related to me through my maternal grandfather, Nathaniel Gardner. As far as I know they are my only relatives in that branch. They grew up in the Buffalo, NY area. I would like to contact them.

4.       Where in Austria did my great grandfather, Leopold Gartner/Gardner, come from? I have not done Jewish research before but I’d like to learn more about this branch.

5.       When did Allen Moses Brown die? He was born 26 January 1836 in Liberty, MS and died after the 1870 Pike Co, MS census.

6.       When did Catherine Mullane die? She was born 8 Feb 1887 in Clomel, Tipperary, Ireland. She may have been a nun. Tombstones in Old Newcastle Cemetery may have the answer.

7.       Was Augustus Ceaser Gruissy murdered by his third wife? He died 8 December 1915 in Stark Co, Ohio. Family stories say she did him in before he could change his will. Finding an obituary or newspaper account may help answer this question.

8.       Who were the parents of Abraham Mark(s)? He was born 12 November 1812 in Corliss, Pennsylvania. He is a brick wall that I’d break through.

9.       Where, in Ireland, was Catherine Gibney born? She was born c 1818. She married Thomas Brady in 1841.

10.   Did Arthur Moses Gartner have any children? He was born 15 June 1884 in New York City. He died after 1948. His wife was Frances. Do I have cousins somewhere?

11.   What year was my husband’s grandfather, Charles Palilla, born? We think it was 7 July 1894 in Naro, Sicily. He would never share the actual year. His daughter would like to know when her father was born.

12.   When and where was Edward Brown born? He was born c 1730. He died c 1797 in Jones, North Carolina.

Census Sunday – Learning Something New from the 1940 Census

Have you found something interesting in a census report? This one added new information for my family tree.

Anna Gartner, b. 1891, was my maternal grandfather’s younger sister. I knew that she was born and lived in New York City. Like my grandfather, she worked for the Western Union Telegraph Company. Census reports and city directories from 1910 to 1930 show Anna Gartner/Gardner living with her father, Leopold. {Her mother died in 1908.]

By 1935 Leopold Gartner had moved to Buffalo, New York to live with his oldest daughter, Florence (Gartner) Weissberg and her family. What happened to Anna?

Leopold died in 1948 in Buffalo. His obituary gave me the first clue about Anna’s life. She was listed as Mrs. Anna Bearman of New York City. Who did she marry? What was she doing?

1940 US Census, New York, Bronx

The 1940 US Census might hold answers. I looked for & found an Anna Bearman living at 1215 Grand Concourse in the Bronx [SD 49, ED 252, Sheet 12A]. She was married to Benjamin H. Bearman from Lithuania. New York City is a big place and there could have been more than one Anna Bearman. The age did not match exactly but I have found that is often the case. I continued to read the census report and got quite excited when I saw Anna’s occupation. She was a book keeper for the Western Union Telegraph Company! Hurray! This was my grand aunt.

I wonder what the next census report will reveal. Here I am in 2012 and looking forward to 1950!

There are times when we can trace a family through census records, getting a fairly clear picture of their lives. I have family documents, letters and photographs of these members of my maternal grandfather’s family. But even if you look only at the census records you can trace the lives of this family from the early years of their marriage to the marriage of their oldest son. You can see Frank progress from tailor to furrier to the owner of his own fur store.

Take note of these interesting items: The head of household’s first name alternates between Frank S. and Samuel F. The surname switches between Weisberg and Weissberg. Florence often changes her age to appear younger than her actual age. 

FOUND: Marriage Record for Samuel Weissberg & Florence Gartner

Florence (Gartner) Weissberg

Sometimes writing an old fashioned letter works wonders. Not everything can be found on the internet. I knew that my grand aunt, Florence Gartner, married Frank Samuel Weissberg in New York City about 1906. In the 1905 New York State Census Florence was living with her father. I knew Florence’s oldest son was born 27 December 1907. By 1910 she was living in Buffalo, New York as a married lady, mother of one son.

I went to the web site for the New York City Municipal Archives

I printed out the PDF form to request a marriage certificate by mail, filled in what I knew, including the range of years when they were most likely married and mailed it to: the New York City Municipal Archives, 31 Chambers Street, New York. About 4 weeks later they mailed me the certificate. I love my mailbox when it has a genealogical treasure.

Samuel Weissberg & Florence Gartner were married on 27 January 1907 in Manhattan. Samuel had been living at 646 East 6 Street. He was a 27 year old Tailor. Florence was living at 340 East 87 Street. She was 23. [As with almost all genealogical advancements, this one comes with a question. It says Florence was born in Hungary whereas all other records show her birth in New York City.] 

Another small family fact has been uncovered. What’s next?

FOUND: More Children of Leopold & Fannie (Edelstein) Gardner

I thought that Leopold & Fannie (Edelstein) Gardner had three sons and two daughters born in New York City, including my maternal grandfather, Nathaniel Gardner.

In researching the family I began with information from my mother, Alberta Joy (Gardner) Brown. US & New York State Census Records & NY City Directories helped me to document her stories.

Recently, on Family Search, I found two more children for Leopold & Fannie. I was looking for more sources to support my information on the family. I had hoped to find birth certificates for any of the five children and thought I found one for Anna. The search results there listed Johanna Gardner, b. 1 November 1890, and the parents’ names matched. That pointed at Anna. I assumed I had the wrong year form my previous research. I wanted to be sure. I sent off a request to the New York City Municipal Archives for a copy of the birth certificate.

Four weeks later the certificate arrived in the mail & I discovered two new children for Leopold & Fannie. The birth certificate was not for Anna. It said, “Sex – Boy”. The name is difficult to read but it does look like Johanna. Or could the ‘J’ be a ‘T’? [Does anyone know a male form of the name? I unsuccessfully looked on line for Jewish boy names.]This son must have been born the year before Anna. He is not shown in any census reports or city directories.However, I am very confident that he does belong with the family. Parents names match, including the mother's maiden name. Even Leopold's job as a Tailor matches.  I am guessing that this child died young. Will I be able to find a death certificate for him? If you can read the child's name, please tell me what you think it is.

Fannie Gartner

The birth certificate also reveals another child. Fannie, age 31, was the mother of six children, five living. Therefore, there had been another child. Will I be able to find a birth or death certificate for that child?
